Diabetes
Diabetic Retinopathy is an eye disease that can occur if you have diabetes. This eye disease can affect the retina and can cause a loss of vision if not treated early.
Tiny red dots, known as microaneurysms, are small retinal hemorrhages and leakage of serum that grow on the eye which can cause a lack of blood flow. When there is a lack of blood flow, the eye tries to grow more blood vessels to create more blood flow. Unfortunately, the blood vessels grow in the wrong places and this creates scaring, bleeding, and tearing of the retina which can cause retinal detachments and blindness.
It is important to have routine eye exams to check for diabetic retinopathy. This eye disease usually can progress without any symptoms and the disease can go undetected. If diagnosed early, the disease can be treated and medications can help prevent any further harm to the retina.
If you have diabetes and have not had a routine eye examination, schedule an appointment with Dr. Yankelove. With the right ophthalmologist and the right treatments, you can continue living a healthier life.
